After public opinion and feedback on the adjustment of the subway and bus fare have been solicited , a final decision has been made. Beijing citizens will say goodbye to the city's low price transportation system next month with the municipal government announcing subway and bus fare hikes on Thursday, Beijing News reported. The new fares, which formally take hold on Dec 28, put bus fares starting at RMB2 and subway fares at RMB3. Bus commuters traveling any distance over 10 km must pay RMB1 for every 5 km. The price of a subway ticket ranges from RMB3 to RMB6 when the traveling distance is below 32 km. People who go further need to pay RMB1 for every 20 km. The two-yuan era for subway in Beijing will come to an end soon. Generally it's reasonable to charge according to the traveling distance. But for millions of migrant workers who live in the suburbs far from their working places, they have to consider increasing their financial budget in daily transportation. Some people may feel pressured financially because of this rise in bus and subway fares. It's estimated that the hike may force a group of immigrant workers to leave Beijing. Experts hope the hike can help remit the busy and crowded traffic. But I think it will help little. Commuters still have to take the subway or bus whether the fares hike or not. Hopefully the management and services can be also improved with the hike of the bus and subway fares.
