This morning I read a piece of news that Guangzhou authorities have released draft rules for household garbage sorting. According to the draft rules, household rubbish will be split into four types-recyclable, hazardous, kitchen and other. The regulation proposes maximum fines of RMB200 on personal violators and RMB2,000 on organizations if they don't sort waste or put it in stipulated places at set times At least one container each for recyclable and hazardous waste must be placed in a neighborhood, or property management will be fined at least RMB10,000. Public opinion is now being sought before it is published officially. Do you think it’s a good idea to have household garbage sorted. Actually it has been advocated for long to sort the garbage but few results are achieved. Chinese people haven’t formed the habiting of sorting the garbage. Most people think it troublesome to sort the garbage and they are used to putting all the household garbage in one trash bin. And few families have different trash bins for different garbage, which makes it almost impossible to split the household rubbish into various kinds. Property management in some districts should also be blamed since they can’t provide different containers. As we all know , old habits are hard to break. People’s behavior and lifestyle should be guided gradually. Fines , as far as I can see, can be an effective measure when a new regulation is implemented at the very beginning. The environmental status of China is serious enough and any positive change makes a difference.
